New Bath boutique hotel brand - The Halcyon

Design Week, 13 August 2009

Bath-based Mytton Williams has created the brand for a new boutique hotel set to open in the city next year.

The consultancy won the Halcyon Hotel brief around two months ago, according to designer Keith Hancox.

Mytton Williams was tasked with developing a brand expression for the hotel, based on the concept of ‘affordable luxury’.

Hancox says the Halcyon Hotel, on the site previously occupied by the George Hotel, will aim to cater for people who want the style and function of a luxury boutique hotel, but at an affordable price.

Halcyon Hotel owner Giles Thomas says, ‘It was quite important that the identity had a bit of character - we wanted it to be sharp and contemporary, but also fun.’

The branding is set to launch with a new website, also being designed by Mytton Williams, which will go live at the end of September or beginning of October.

The hotel is due to open in spring 2010, with the brand applied to ‘everything from coasters to umbrellas’, as well as outdoor signage and hotel bicycles, according to Hancox.

New Boutique Hotel in Bath

The Guardian, 2 January 2010

New Bath rooms

Considering its popularity as a weekend destination, Bath has a dearth of affordable boutique hotels. There's the Queensberry, and, er, that's it. So the Halcyon, due to open in February, will come as a welcome addition. The website claims that this 21-room city-centre hotel will offer "heavy-duty luxury at a light-on-the-wallet price". With no pictures on the website at the time of going to press, it's hard to judge to what extent this is PR puff but with standard rooms starting at £99 (£89, Mon-Thur in February), and cocktails in the hotel bar from £6, it's looking hopeful. A Grade I listed Georgian townhouse, it will offer rooms kitted out with Philippe Starck bathroom fittings and White Company products. And with bikes and boats for guests to borrow, a cheeky spring break suddenly seems doable.
